The Science Behind Our Technology

Namirsa devices use three well-studied approaches to recovery: TENS, electrical muscle stimulation and percussion therapy. Below are short summaries of published research, with links to the full studies.

TENS and pain

Study: Effectiveness of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation for Treatment of Hyperalgesia and Pain (review).

In short: TENS sends gentle electrical current through pads on the skin. The review explains that TENS is a widely used, drug-free and non-invasive option, and that it appears to work through both the nerves at the site of use and pathways in the spinal cord and brain. Low and high frequencies seem to act through different mechanisms, and researchers continue to study which settings work best for which conditions.

How it relates to Namirsa: the Nampad Pro includes TENS modes with adjustable intensity.

Electrical muscle stimulation

Study: Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation for Treatment of Muscle Impairment (review by Canadian physical therapy educators, clinicians and researchers).

In short: the authors reviewed published research on electrical stimulation strong enough to produce visible muscle contractions. They put together practical guidance on settings and application for physical therapists, along with safety tips.

How it relates to Namirsa: the Nampad Pro's EMS modes use electrical pulses to contract and relax the muscle.

Percussion therapy and recovery

Study: Comparison of Interventional Strategies to Improve Recovery after Eccentric Exercise-Induced Muscle Fatigue.

In short: researchers compared four recovery methods after a hard training session: manual massage, mechanical vibration, percussion therapy and foam rolling. They measured muscle response with a non-invasive test called tensiomyography. The study looks at percussion therapy alongside more traditional techniques and notes that more research on percussion devices is still under way.

How it relates to Namirsa: the Namirsa Mini and Namirsa Pro massage guns deliver percussion therapy, and the Namirsa Roller offers vibrating foam rolling.
